Sick But Still Working
I was planning a post over the weekend but I’ve been under the weather. So I cancelled the trip me and K had planned to Gyeryongsan National Park to go hiking up Gyeryongsan (the mountain for which the park was named). I’ve had a persistant chest cold for the last two weeks. Since Friday I’ve been getting worse so we figured we’d be better off to just walk around the city and do some exploring. One highlight of the day included a round in the batting cage. Actually it was a lowlight for K as she got frustrated when she didn’t immediately start knocking balls out of the park. I got her into the cage once, but she didn’t care to try twice. It’s one of the little differences we share. When I suck at something I’ll usually bear down and keep at it until I get it, or at least reach mediocrity. It’s fun, kind of a Wiley E. Coyote syndrome.
The other highlight of the day was buying brand new mountain bikes!! They’ve opened up the city in a whole new way. After we got the bikes, we just rode around the city. It was nice to be able to cover so much ground. Today we checked out Daejon’s World Cup Soccer Stadium which is about 7km from where we live. The bike trip took about an hour altogether, and that’s not bad considering how the traffic can slow things down.
Work is going well as both K and I are settling into the Waygook (Foreigner) life. The school director might take me to the doctor tomorrow depending on how i feel in the morning. The bug has really been going out here, I know quite a few teachers have been sick recently. The worst case was a guy I play frisbee with who wound up in the hospital with pneumonia, but he’s out and better now. Anyways I’m not that bad, but teaching is difficult when you can’t talk without going into coughing fits. I shall also have some photo album updates on for those who are interested.
On Friday when I start at 2:30 I come in early again, this time 9:30 and for about a half hour I am getting good work done. Then the server is overloaded and before I know it another day is gone. So I come in on Saturday at 11:30 even though I my classes begin at 4:30. Tommorow I bring in Chocolate because a holiday is coming called Chu-Seok which is sort of the Korean version of Thanksgiving. And believe me I am thankful to have some time off. I’m also thankful because I’ve met some great people out here and this is shaping up to be a terrific experience for me, and finally…. I am thankful that K arrived in Korea and is going to be teaching along with me.
She arrived on Wednesday, and at work on Thursday I got an idea of how I must have looked on my first days, tired and terrified. At least K will have the benefit of my first month experiences so she will do much better than I did, she won’t make half as many mistakes. She’s also recieved some proper training and orientation which personally I wish I had gotten. We’ve spent our first few days together with me playing a sort of guide to her tourist. Today we did some hiking (I will go into detail here about the hike in a different entry) and we also went to my apartment and got all my stuff packed. We cleaned the place out for the teacher taking my place and came back to the hotel, which leaves me here, blogging away at 1am while I drive off those bloody sodding report cards.
