During my trip to Indonesia this past summer I added three cookbooks to my collection. Two were by Indonesian celebrity chefs and the 3rd was called Jakarta Street food. The book appealed because RS and her brother took me to a night market in Jakarta to try some of the street food and it was great!  While the book itself is a little short, I appreciated that the recipes were bilingual, featuring Indonesian on the top half of the page with English on the bottom.  The translation was also pretty well done, making the English recipes accessible.

I chose this recipe because of the name.  The dish may be called Indomie Telur Kornet, but it’s known as the Internet. Indomie is a popular brand of Indonesian ramen noodles, Telur represents the egg poached in ramen water and the Kornet is corned beef, which is fried in butter. It’s a tasty dish, but it’s definitely not a healthy one!

Indomie Telur Kornet (Internet)

 

Ingredients
  • 1 pack chicken-flavored Indomie ramen Noodles
  • 75 g corned beef
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 bok choy
  • 1 tbsp sliced green onion
  • 1 tsp fried shallots
  • 1 tbsp sambal
  • 1000 ml water

Add water to a medium pot and bring to a boil. Add the noodles, and boil for 3-4 minutes. Remove the noodles and place into a bowl. Use about 1/2 cup of the water to mix the seasoning packet and add to the bowl while stirring the noodles. Place the pot back onto the stove and bring the remaining water to a boil again. Reduce the heat to medium, the water should only be simmering at this point.  Use the remaining water in the pot to blanche the bok choy and poach the egg.  Once the bok choy and egg are ready, add them to the noodles. Then  add a ladel of  water to the noodles. They should be about 2/3 covered, if not then add a little more water.  Top the noodles with the corned beef and sambal, and garnish with the green onions and shallots.
