60 Days in the Desert…

60 Days in the Desert…

I’m now into my second month in Qatar. I’m not really sure what to make of life over here just yet. Back when moved to Korea, I remember diving into the experience. Going to temples, hiking, visiting cities, learning the language. I quickly developed an affection for the country and its people. Up until now, I’ve had little desire to get out and explore over here. The exploring I have done has been forced, not because I want to so much but because I know that I should. That isn’t to say that the exploring hasn’t been fun, just that these days its of little interest.

College life is starting to settle down, what once seemed intimidating and complicated is now becoming commonplace and routine. We’ve just had midterms, and I’m pleased to say four out of five of my students passed. The students here for the most part are quite nice, but they can also be quite challenging.

I’m thankful that Korea taught me to keep my mind open and be flexible. You don’t always have to agree with your hosts, but you should be a good guest so to speak. Qatar on the other hand is teaching me about patience and serenity for which this little prayer comes to mind…

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

By the time I leave this place I suspect I will have earned that wisdom.
